Terschelling
Published by Katie June 13th, 2007 in AlbaniaThe Wadden Sea has done a wonderful job with the island of Terschelling. Here’s more proof if the photos above aren’t convincing:
White sand beaches and dunes that stretch on and on for kilometers, plus an inland covered by pine forests, this West Frisian Island off the northern coast of the Netherlands is a gem. Just a ferry ride (45 minutes or two hours, depending on the ferry) from the town of Harlingen, Terschelling is a beautiful, thriving island that houses a bicycle-riding, life loving community.
Ben and I did our best to join in and ‘live’ Terschelling for just under a week.
These three photos are from a particular spot on the North Sea side of the island. The other side has Wadden sea shoreline (photos above). It was our bicycling day, which gave both of us a run for our money (I hadn’t been on a bicycle in well over a year!). But it’s the perfect way to see the island and we loved being so mobile, stopping at cafes and restaurants and fences where baby goats, horses, cows, etc. bathed in the sun.
Along the bicycle path that bordered the Wadden Sea shoreline. The sheep are so clean and look so happy, resting and eating in the super green pastures.
Outside of the flat we rented, right in the middle of West Terschelling (largest town on the island). We were about 200 meters from a very big and old lighthouse that continues to shine its light out into the sea. Ben and I simply looked for the lighthouse and it led us home, day or night.
We spent quite a bit of time on the beaches, especially the main beach, which was a five minute walk from our flat. Bikes, beach chairs, music, and Heinekens were the main ingredients of the perfect sunset campout:
Ben testing out our site for the evening.
Things proved to be in working order until …
Katie had something to say - perhaps about her view of the sunset?
Happy again! (was happy the whole time) and content to settle in for the evening.
Ready, that is, when it includes a certain young, American man in a Marmot coat drinking his Heinekens against the sun.
Like I said, we lived Terschelling and loved every minute of our days there.
And so we spent the days roaming the island, eating at fabulous cafes and restaurants (more details to come), talking with locals and enjoying daily Terschelling life.
A house with a great name down the street from our flat.
When the morning came to pack up and catch the ferry back to the mainland, we got a view of an island we’d come to know and hope to visit again.
